Sarah Palin, the gaff-prone Inspector Clouseau-esque soccer mom from Alaska is currently embarking on a foreign tour to enhance augment burnish establish rustle-up cobble together bodge fake some foreign relations credentials before running for President of the US of A. Wonderfully predictably Palin has made a whopper of a gaff already.
On a visit to – equally predictably – Israel, she did not realise that Bethlehem is not actually in Israel but the West Bank. So when her motorcade began to approach an Israeli check-point to leave Israel it slowed, scratched its proverbial head, felt a sinking feeling in the pit of its stomach and then performed a U-turn, scurrying away.
The Israeli Defense Ministry noted that she had not made any request to visit the West Bank, as is customary on such visits.
Truly the thought of this incompetent having her finger on the nuclear button worries me.
Palin, Giffords & a grimly prophetic video 11, January 2011

This is a remarkably and grimly prophetic video by US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords warning that there are “consequences” to Sarah Palin using ‘gun sights’ to mark out her district as one to be targeted.
(Incidentally, the Palin camp is trying to deny that these manifestly obvious crosshairs are in fact crosshairs, but rather ‘surveyor’s symbols’ as one would see on any map. This from the gun-toting, ‘don’t retreat, reaload’ Palin. Hmm.)
Clearly, Palin et al (al being the shrieking right wing press and, of course, some left wing idiots too) are not directly responsible for the shooting. But how they can deny some responsibility is beyond me. They are, to my mind, wholly culpable for continuing and exacerbating a polarized culture where the other side are often demonized with a vicious, hyperbole-strewn, militarised vocabulary.

Blue: You can travel safely in this area without encountering immigrants, Africans, homosexuals, automatic weapons, or homosexuals with automatic weapons. If you avoid the Green and Yellow Metro lines. And buses. And coffee shops. And restaurants. And taxis
Red: You will encounter people in these areas who have never been to an Applebee’s in their lives. USE CAUTION. Especially if they try to talk Mexican at you.
This map is to help those patriotic hicks people off to see Sarah ‘just a Hockey Mom’ Palin and Glenn ‘I just love my country so damn much’ Beck in Washington D.C.
Before you think that this map is just some mean, snide, liberal attempt at mockery, this map is actually based on information given by a Tea Party supporter offering advice to those arriving in the Capital.
Here’s my favorite excerpt:
Safety and Mores
DC’s population includes refugees from every country, as the families of embassy staffs of third world countries tend to stay in DC whenever a revolution in their homeland means that anyone in their family would be in danger if they went back. Most taxi drivers and many waiters/waitresses (especially in local coffee shops like the Bread and Chocolate chain) are immigrants, frequently from east Africa or Arab countries. As a rule, African immigrants do not like for you to assume they are African Americans and especially do not like for you to guess they are from a neighboring country (e.g. Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia) with whom they may have political or military tensions. It’s rare to meet anyone who gets really offended, but you can still be aware of the issue.
Many parts of DC are safe beyond the areas I will list here, but why chance it if you don’t know where you are?
If you are on the subway stay on the Red line between Union Station and Shady Grove, Maryland. If you are on the Blue or Orange line do not go past Eastern Market (Capitol Hill) toward the Potomac Avenue stop and beyond; stay in NW DC and points in Virginia. Do not use the Green line or the Yellow line. These rules are even more important at night. There is of course nothing wrong with many other areas; but you don’t know where you are, so you should not explore them.
A Palin-Beck ticket? 21, November 2009

It gives me no pleasure to recount this potential news, heralding as it would if it ever came to fruition the end of civilization as we know it. Yet Sarah Palin, the great thinker of the Republican Party, has countenanced the notion of running on a ticket with Glenn Beck, the Fox news…erm…personality.
I realize that this is, in many ways, a non-news story. The odds of this ticket taking off are exceedingly small and the odds of its success are practically infinitesimal. Just take it, therefore, as a cautionary tale: yes, things might be bad now, but be careful what you wish for…

America and the world has escaped a tyranny of stupidity by but five and half points. Sarah Palin’s latest anecdotes are the best of the lot. Apparently she was unaware of the countries involved in NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement). One would think that with but a tiny, scraping-the-barrel kind of intelligence, one would be able to work out that there is a rather large clue in the title…but alas. However, the best one of the lot is her apparent belief that Africa, you know, the CONTINENT, was actually a country. There’s simply nothing you can say to that. [Incidentally, note that the confirmation of this African gaff comes from Fox News – the Republican’s news station of choice.]

Here is an excellent link to Sarah Palin’s Oval Office. Harsh but fair, as they say. Just keep clicking…there’s plenty more.
Palin and her ‘North Korean allies’ 25, November 2010

Presumed future Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has made another whopper. In discussing the situation on the Korean Peninsula after aiming some really rather exceedingly poor jabs at Obama she stated that America must obviously stand with “our North Korean allies.” She had to be corrected by the radio host.
Really and truly what is this woman like? She simply and honestly comes across as stupid and sadly I think that this is a reasonable reflection of her intellect. I don’t mean this overly pejoratively but quite literally as in she is not very intelligent. The thought of her as President Palin is just plain terrifying. And what a ‘President Palin’ would say about the American electorate doesn’t bear thinking about.
